After cleaning, make sure you dry the entire couch with a clean and dry microfiber cloth. Any excess water must be removed before attempting to condition the couch so it doesn’t get trapped under the conditioner.
It’s ok if you end up having to make an educated guess on what type your fabric is. Do a spot test on the back side of the sofa or the underside of a cushion before diving in. This is why with my sofa, which was a very faded green, I opted to use the color peacock green from Rit’s synthetic dye line. My cushion is also reversible and removable, which not only made it easier to transport home, but also made it easier to dye. If the cushion(s) are not removable, it’s not a huge issue, but it is something you’ll have to weigh into your decision to buy or not.
Make sure to thoroughly dry the sofa so there’s no risk of mould or mildew building up. You can then apply a leather conditioner to restore moisture and suppleness although this is entirely optional and should only be done once or twice a year. If you have pets then you’ll no doubt understand the struggle of trying to keep your sofa as clean as possible. Hair will shed, there’ll probably be the odd scratch here and there and odours will linger.
All you need is water, a bit of elbow grease and a bar of white soap if the stain or general dirt is extra stubborn. The last thing you want to do when you see your dog jump up on the sofa covered in mud is panic. Especially when cleaning one of our sofas is so easy to do! For stains like mud, ketchup, lipstick or silly putty, you’ll need to grab a teaspoon and first remove any stain residue with the edge of the spoon.

Like I said, I’ve had my West Elm Henry sofa for years (which cost less than $1,000), and I find it perfectly comfortable. I just think knowledge is power and the more you know when making a big purchase, the better! It is kind of like the couch w/ attached chaise option you show, but since the high back goes around the whole thing it always feels like I need pillows in more spots. But then I end up having the issues mentioned by another poster where we end up with a giant pile of throw pillows taking up space when the family piles onto the sectional. Professionals will use a dry cleaning method that will avoid water entirely, and put you totally at ease about the care of your precious fabric.
There are three main types of fabric used on sofas – natural fibers, synthetic fibers, and blends. Laid-back sofas tend to sit lower to the ground, with a sloped
back for lounging. Great for casual evenings with the family and
friends, kicking back together. Perfect for watching movies or
lying back listening to music.
How I Keep Our White Couches…WHITE!
Think about the design and style that goes best with your current decor. Make sure that the frame, springs, and cushions are covered by the warranty. If the cushions are not fastened, take them out and give both sides a good vacuuming. Remember to clean the wooden and metallic components as well.
Step 5: Attaching the Angle Iron & Bolts
Make sure the cushions are comfortable and supportive, and that the sofa is at the right height for you. When shopping for a quality sofa, one of the most important things to look for is well-constructed springs. Springs provide support and comfort, and they should be firm yet flexible. If there are gaps or the springs sag, that is a sign of poor quality. When shopping for a new sofa, it is important to know the difference between fabrics.
