Various societal responses seen in many countries, such as community support activities and bolstering mental health and crisis services, may have had mitigating effects on the mental health burden. Finally, we cannot rule out a lag-time effect, where disorders may take more time to develop or be picked up, especially because some of the personal financial or social consequences of the COVID pandemic may only become apparent later. It should be noted that data from low-income countries and longer-term studies beyond the first pandemic year are largely absent. Barriers to accessing mental health care predate the pandemic, though they may have worsened in recent years, particularly for at-risk groups.

We all have good days and bad days, just as days when we feel healthier than other times. Mental health should stay on our radar; promoting it should be among our day-to-day goals. Talk to your doctor or nurse about the benefits and risks of your medicines. Ways to support your child or teen’s mental wellness

But the true impact of these illnesses on the individual—that was not something I fully understood. In college, the core of my effort was devoted to studying molecular biology and the mysteries of the cancer cell. It was midway through my time there that my first direct experience with the burden of mental illness hit. A classmate of mine must have been struggling more than any of us were aware. As is all too common on college campuses, he lost his life to suicide towards the end of our sophomore year. Nothing can erase the shock of learning how he died, nor the memory of his stoic, disbelieving parents greeting us after his memorial service. Behavioral health services can be delivered in clinical settings as well as in schools and other settings. In addition, community-based organizations are a source of nonclinical supports, sometimes provided by individuals who have had behavioral health conditions themselves. Examples of common problems include anxiety, depression, substance use disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. If one or both of a teen’s biological parents has a mental illness, the teen may be at an increased risk of developing one as well. Of course, these mental health care tips are not solutions to living with mental health conditions. These are tools in your arsenal but not a cure-all for mental illness. It is also important to consider that some people may have co-occurring disorders.
