How Do You Maintain Carbon Fiber Parts?

Carbon fiber parts are way stronger and stiffer compared to parts made from other materials. Carbon fiber has the highest stiffness and strength per density than any other material or metal. Its strength makes it appropriate for high-performance cars that need strong parts. Carbon fiber also absorbs energy at a higher rate compared to other metals.

Composites Carbon Fibre FAQS

Process variables such as time, temperature, gas flow, and chemical composition are closely monitored during each stage of the production. During the 1970s, experimental work to find alternative raw materials led to the introduction of carbon fibers made from a petroleum pitch derived from oil processing. These fibers contained about 85% carbon and had excellent flexural strength. Unfortunately, they had only limited compression strength and were not widely accepted. Though carbon fiber is stronger and stiffer than steel, it is lighter than steel; making it the ideal manufacturing material for many parts. These are just a few reasons why carbon fiber is favored by engineers and designers for manufacturing. Carbon fiber composites don’t rust or corrode the way metals do, and they don’t rot the way wood does.

A Brief History on Carbon Fiber

When you want to prototype a composite Part and only want to make 1-3 Parts, it would be a waste to make real composite moulds and a simple Foam mould is sufficient. For my Part, I made a foam mould that worked perfectly for 3 parts, and now that I know that the shape is good and I want to make a lot more of the parts, I made a proper Mould for them. Composite Materials 101

The United States, Japan, and Western Europe are the leading producers of carbon fibers. These polymers consist of long strings of molecules held together by carbon atoms. About 90 percent of carbon fibres are made by using the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) process. The remaining 10 percent are made using either the rayon or petroleum pitch process. The main difference is that Kevlar essentially contains nitrogen atoms and carbon fibre mainly contains carbon atoms. Kevlar has a better abrasive strength than carbon fibre, whilst carbon fibre has the best strength and rigidity to weight ratio in the industry. Traditionally, carbon fiber is cut from sheeting and then manipulated into a mold, resulting in a material waste and difficult layups.
